My name is Sergio Mauricio Vargas Cardenas, but my clients know me simply as Sergio. My story isn't one of natural athleticism or lifelong fitness—it's one of transformation, struggle, and finding purpose in the darkest moments.
At 21, I hit my lowest point. Weighing 264 pounds, I was exhausted from just sitting on the couch, sweating constantly, and trapped in a cycle of eating my feelings and drinking away stress. I felt completely lost, with no direction and no one to guide me out of what felt like an impossible situation. I'd always known I wanted to help others, even studying to become an EMT, but nothing felt right.
Everything changed when a trainer at the YMCA introduced me to LA Boxing. On my first day, an incredible trainer kicked my ass—then asked me a question no one had ever dared to ask: "Why did you let yourself go?" I had no words. But what she said next changed everything: "I am going to help you, and it won't be easy, but I will be with you every step of the way."
That moment ignited my passion. I fell in love with fitness, but more importantly, I discovered my calling: helping others who felt as helpless as I once did, showing them they're not alone.
When my trainer passed away, I made a commitment that would define my life. I would make her proud by continuing her legacy—helping those who feel lost find their strength. I started teaching kids' classes, then adults, and saw the profound impact I could make. I realized I'd rather help people stay healthy than wait for them to need an ambulance.
My journey wasn't easy. Working night shifts and hitting the gym immediately after, stepping into the ring with bigger, more experienced fighters, getting hurt physically—but the biggest opponent was my own lack of confidence. That internal battle taught me that fitness hurts both mentally and physically, but that's where the real growth happens.
"I coach to build more than strength—I build discipline, confidence, and faith. Through boxing and fitness, I help people push limits, grow resilient, and become their best selves inside and outside the gym."
To me, fitness goes far beyond looking good in summer clothes or fitting into smaller sizes. I believe our bodies are the home of our spirit—we must take care of them so we can do great works in this world. It's my purpose to help those struggling both physically and mentally discover their own strength.
With over 10 years of experience as a fitness coach, I bring both professional expertise and personal understanding to every session.
I work with all walks of life—from the "couch potato" to the determined athlete who will stop at nothing. My specializations include:
When I'm not coaching, you'll find me spending time with my 8-year-old son, who's beginning his own boxing journey. I'm active in my faith community, enjoy nature walks, and love expanding my knowledge. I might surprise you to know I'm passionate about salsa and bachata dancing!
I'm deeply committed to my community, teaching boxing and kickboxing to kids every Saturday at a family-owned gym in San Pedro. I'm also the founder of Fight Night Events, helping aspiring fighters test their skills and grow.
"Strength isn't just built in the body—it's forged in the mind every time you refuse to quit."
I want you to understand that the stronger you get, the more challenging it will become. Growth means knowing there's always more to work on. When you work with me, you're not just getting a trainer—you're getting someone who's walked the path from rock bottom to purpose, and I'll be with you every step of the way.
